Rock In Opposition
France Event April 2007
HISTORY
The Origin
Rock in Opposition or "RIO" was a movement representing a collective of "progressive" bands in the late 1970s united in their opposition to the music industry that refused to recognise their music. It was initiated by Henry Cow in March 1978 when they invited four European groups to come to London and perform in a festival called "Rock in Opposition".
The groups that performed in the inaugural event were:
Henry Cow (UK), Stormy Six (Italy), Samla Mammas Manna (Sweden), Univers Zéro (Belgium) and Etron Fou Leloublan (France).
After the festival, RIO was formalised as an organisation with a charter whose aim was to represent and promote its members. Three more bands were also added to the collective: Art Bears (UK), Art Zoyd (France) and Aksak Maboul (Belgium), and further festivals were held later in France, Italy and Sweden. Chris Cutler of Henry Cow established the ReR (Recommended Records) label in the UK, as a model for a non-profit music company.
RIO as a movement did not last long, but its legacy still persists. While RIO never referred to a type of music (the original RIO bands were quite diverse musically), it is still often used by listeners, musicians, and distributors to classify bands (generally bands that appeared at the RIO festivals or bands related to or derived from the RIO bands). Bands familiarized with the RIO movement and genre today include: Thinking Plague (USA), Present (Belgium), Miriodor (Canada), Ahvak (Israel), Neblenest (France), 5uu's (USA), Guapo (UK) and U Totem (USA).
The term "RIO" today is almost synonymous with Avant-progressive rock or Experimental Rock.

Rock In Opposition France Event 2007
During an encounter in Brussels in December 2005, Michel Besset and Roger Trigaux discussed their common desire to initiate in France - and everywhere in the world, since that fight is of an interplanetary kind! - new dynamics around those musical forms that have thrilled them since the early 70's.
For Roger, this desire is linked to the permanent commitment of a musician who always refused to compromise or to "adapt" his music to the mainstream taste of non-demanding audiences, and who always had to cope with the obstacles generated by such a radical approach.
For Michel, this is the willingness to come back to these musical streams that have shaped the identity of "Transparence", the association he founded in 1974, back in a period of deep musical innovation, when truly committed artists gave birth to numerous passionated initiatives that were often risky and far off the beaten tracks of commercial production. In the meantime, both Michel and Roger have witnessed a worldwide flourishment of music Festivals dedicated to so-called "progressive" musical forms, but in fact mostly presenting artists who are redundantly recycling the recipes of the same old cult-bands.
Something had to be done...
The birth of that new musical event is in continuity with gigs that have been promoted for the last three decades by the association "Transparences" in Carmaux, Albi and other locations in Southern France (with such artists as Henry Cow, Art Zoyd, Léo Ferré, Univers Zero, Magma, Nucleus, Contrepoint, Present...).
This event illustrates how this association has always been a committed partner to the most UNCOMPROMISING artists, AGAINST a commercial system that forces them to adapt their creativity to a demand created by the system itself and IN OPPOSITION to a system that seems to be inescapable and self-consuming.
The idea is not to hide in the past.
Back in the 70's, artists had to fight to promote these so-called "radical" musical forms, and it's getting even more difficult nowadays. Just because that music is demanding - not that it requires an effort from the audience, but only because it appeals to his curiosity and his longing for new perspectives. The complex language, the emotion and the depth, the real collective work that characterize musicians who dedicated themselves to that music, made their way through several decades and finally reached the new generations, tired of hearing cheap discourses and mainstream merchandised music.
In France, one band epitomizes that fight: Magma, whose lasting musical influence has become more and more obvious as years have passed. But outside France as well, such artists as Robert Wyatt, Soft Machine, Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix have been important symbols for a whole generation.
Sometimes the music reaches its targ... when it has one!
Sometimes the music reaches its target… when it has one! Those musicians opened our minds and gave us enough strength to pursue that struggle, for ourselves, for the music and for the human condition in general. After more than three decades, we now realise how crucial that issue can be.
After having experienced other forms of music, we are now able to understand the significance of the music we defend today.

HISTORIQUE
L’origine

Rock In Opposition France Event 2007

Special Event, World Première
Two "Grand Piano", a lot of percussions, the musicians of PRESENT playing percussions and vocals, as well as a special guest, Ward DE VLEESCHHOUWER (Grand Piano), will play the music of PRESENT.
A "World Première" creation, which demonstrates, with strenght, the interest to interprete this music in another way than in the traditional PRESENT Rock set-up.
The emotion is different, more subtle, but keeping its extreme intensity of caracters that we will find the next day with the PRESENT Rock set-up.
Cultist compositions of Roger Trigaux and an unpublished piece especially composed for this event!

Ian Carss - Official Rock In Opposition Festival '16 Review
Rock In Opposition [2016] : Carmaux, du 16 au 18 septembre 2016

10th Rock In Opposition festival 15-16-17/09/2017
10 Years Already!
When we organized the 1st Rock in Opposition (RIO) in 2007 we did not know that this event would have such longevity. At first every other year, this festival then took off each year by the attractions that it exerted to music-lovers of the whole world.
The quality of its programming and the family atmosphere of this event is no stranger.
The public of R.I.O. Has gradually developed around a family of faithful who comes from both North America and Asia.
For this anniversary we wanted (once again but especially this year) to create a unique moment.
A condensed version of the previous years which illustrates the unique spirit of the R.I.O : Its singular musical line, its sense of welcome, and its extraordinary encounters.
So here comes the time to find the audience that has trusted us during all these unforgettable editions.
The program can be questionable (and discussed!).
It is perfectly (meticulously) chosen and assumed.
Rarely has it imposed itself on me so clearly and evidently.
Many already seen? Certainly ... not by facility, but by choice.
We invited the best of what was possible, not only a large part of the groups that marked the past R.I.O. events, but also references we are delighted to have and which we would not have dared to even dream of: SLAPP HAPPY and ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE.
We are certain that the event will live up to, or rather ... exceed your expectations!
For our part, we decided to celebrate this with all the warmth and friendliness that characterizes the atmosphere of this incredible festival.
A great weekend of music that will remain, I think, unique in our memories!
So let us see each other in September? Yes.

Rock In Opposition Fest-France Celebrates its 10th Anniversary & Features 3 Cuneiform Artists
Ian Carss - Rock In Opposition Review
11th Rock In Opposition festival 14-15-16/09/2018
For this 11th edition, Rock In Opposition (R.I.O.) is reinventing itself and will be the first of a new genre.
Young groups of the new French scene are the cornerstone.
Freshness, talent, amazing crossover of today's music, originality, commitment and sincerity of artists... unique moments in perspective.
Far from common formats, and in an artistic programming requirement now legendary, this edition proposes to highlight the different emerging musical scenes in our country.
The loyal public, which has come from the 4 corners of the planet since its inception, is now joined by a great many enthusiasts of new and adventurous music from our region and the whole of France.
Now an international reference and an organ of the new musical creation in Occitanie, the festival is therefore committed to surprise and enthousiasmer each of them for whom this annual appointment is the place where it is absolutely necessary.
The warm and caring welcome of both artists and the public, and their interaction, are constantly improved by a dedicated team that is dedicated to customizing each relationship, in a real sense of quality and sense of meeting.
So, welcome to the family to you for these 3 days of musical surprises?
Michel Besset 14/01/2018 16:10
Good morning to all and all,
Very busy at the end of the 11th Rock In Opposition festival, I reacted a little late to the announcement of Cuneiform Records.
This is to say the importance of this label through its publishing work without which many artists would not have found a way to be broadcast.
With regard to the Rock In Opposition festival:
- we found with cuneiform a complementarity in the identification of American artists
- an ear (and a brain!) attentive to the European scene
- the possibility to broadcast many concert artists on stage and on disk
All this through a shared work of serious prescription in a common trust framework.
Which allowed these artists to play on the Rock In Opposition scene.
And to be edited by Cuneiform.
The last example, not least, is the realization of this splendid coffret art box, which I had the honour of producing the first album.
So much courage and professionalism must be recognized.
I know that the adventure will continue in another form and that the equip team will continue to amaze us by daring and still metre these new music that we all have a vital need.
See you soon on the road....
Michel Besset, Rock in Opposition 16/01/2018 19:31

For its eleventh edition, RIO is reinventing itself and is therefore going to be a brand new festival.
Young bands from the "new French scene" will be its cornerstone.
Novelties, talent, surprising mix of current music, originality, commited and sincere artists... great moments are surely to be expected.
Far from the classic format and yet respectful of a henceforth legendary and demanding programme, this edition is willing to highlight the different musical trends that are currently appearing in our country.
The ranks of the worldwide and faithful audience is now swollen by lots of enthusiatic fans of local and adventurous talents.
RIO has become an international reference and quite a summit in terms of musical inventiveness in Occitanie. Our staff always make sure that the public will be pleasantly surprised and do their best to make of our festival the very place-to-be.
We are extremely devoted to a warm and caring welcome both of the artists and of the audience. We work hard to improve it year after year. The whole team does its best to turn each encounter into a true, humane experience.
So welcome to the RIO family for those three musically surprising days!

LaDepeche 09/05/2017
Alec K. Redfearn & The Eyesores

Michel Besset, Rock in Opposition 20/09/2018 18:59
Hello everyone and thank you for making this event a great moment. It was a risky bet that we brilliantly took up with you. This artistic turn was necessary and made possible by Manu Muré's discovering talent, and by the artists who make all the efforts worthy of real artists ... This 11th festival is therefore placed in a good place in the legend of R.I.O. which still generates as many "vocations" and dreams as in 1978, year of its creation. Its founders (Chris Cutler, Fred Frith and Henry Cow musicians) can be proud of it. The work of the volunteers and the salaried team is to be welcomed, that of the technicians too. The importance of this rare moment for all of us has become obvious. And I am, despite everything, every time amazed. A new generation is seizing it and it may be the most important at this time. Because the transmission of this culture and the freedom it conveys is essential. We still have a lot of work to finish it ... Thanks again to all of you who have been here from so far and so present. See you soon, Michel Besset.

12th Rock In Opposition festival 09-10-11/05/2019
A NEW ROCK IN OPPOSITION
Rock in Opposition (R.I.O.) is a musical movement founded in the 1970s by progressive rock bands, at the instigation of drummer Chris Cutler, guitarist Fred Frith and their band Henry Cow.
Initially, this movement aims to change attitudes in music listening, and especially to oppose the record industry that refuses to publish their albums. The motto of the movement is «to rock differently by opposing the record industry». Since then, this protesting musical movement no longer really exists in itself, it has taken another form, and many people continue to use this name to designate some progressive, avant-garde, fusion, psychedelic or experimental rock bands that remain outside the norms established by the music business.
The culmination of this current, still alive, is structured around an international festival: Rock in Opposition France Event. Various editions took place in England, Italy and France, including 11 editions in Carmaux, near Albi in the south west of France.
Meeting of top musicians and an audience of enthusiasts from five continents, the Abattoirs of Bourgoin-Jallieu and Periscope in Lyon are honored to host this essential meeting of the music of today, whose quality of reception and the requirement of the artistic programming do not decline with the passing of years.
Focused around the highlights of Present’s new creation, in residency for a week at «Les Abattoirs» and Robert Wyatt’s Rock Bottom, Rock in Opposition presents 11 bands French and international:
both historical references of this movement: Koenji Hyakkei (Japan), The Watts (Chris Cutler, Tim Hodkinson, Yumi Hara), John Greaves and Geoff Leigh (England) but also the young French scene and especially from the area (Poil, Piniol).
These international meetings (the public coming from 20 different countries, North and South America, Asia, Europe, Eastern Europe and the Middle East) will be the occasion for direct exchanges between artists and the public thanks to conferences (in 2 languages) by each groups scheduled at the end of their concert, a unique opportunity to discover the spirit and the work of the musicians, in a direct relationship with the artist. The meeting, the exchange, the transmission but also of course the discovery of new music and the emotion being, since its origin, the main objectives of Rock in Opposition.
All this in a friendly atmosphere whose qualities of reception of the public, the artists, the care brought to the sound, the range of discography of the present distributors is from now on legendary.
In view of the exigency, the originality, the innovation, the defense of the aesthetics not mediatised by the artistic and cultural projects of «Les Abattoirs» and «Le Periscope», to welcome the Rio in our venues is an evidence. To give voice to this musical current, without concessions, which reminds us of the very essence of Rock, seems to us to be indispensable at the moment when the average public is
drowned by the media flows of a Pop tinged with electro which one names too often Rock.
This invitation to travel, to meet international, national and regional audiences and artists, delights us and we hope you many to live these unique moments that we guarantee you unforgettable. Finally, the climax of this Rio 2019, with the presentation of Robert Wyatt’s major work, Rock Bottom, by the North Sea Radio Orchestra with John Greaves & Annie Barbazza promises to reach the heights of the
history of the Rio . No doubt, a pure moment of pleasure ...... ..
To conclude, welcome to all in the great family of R.I.O. !
Keep on Rocking.
UN NOUVEAU ROCK IN OPPOSITION

Michel Besset 06/10/2019 13:10.
Important release
It is with a great sadness that I must announce today that the 12th edition of the ROCK IN OPPOSITION France Event held in Bourgoin-Jallieu and Lyon last may is the last of the name. Indeed, given the change of direction of the current music scene "Les Abattoirs", and the complex mutation of the missions of his team, it would be very risky to consider a next edition.
At the end of the R.I.O. from Carmaux, we had, José Molina (Director of the Abattoirs) and I did my utmost to maintain this unique event on the national territory.
Today is the end of this wonderful story. And it is with great difficulty, both for the organizers, volunteers, technicians, artists and public that we must make this decision.
For my part I continue to work on other projects which, I hope, I will have the opportunity to talk to you very soon...
Thank you all for this fabulous adventure.
And long live MUSIC. Michel Besset 06/10/2019 13:11
